Hand Up
Youth Food Pantry at JFS

Hand Up…Youth Food Pantry at JFS’s Turk Family Center is a special opportunity for teens to learn about social change and the difference their altruistic efforts can make in other people’s lives. Through hands-on experience these children are tackling the issue of hunger in the San Diego community.

Featuring:

• An innovative opportunity to involve youth in providing food to San Diego’s hungry.
• Assembly of food bags and distribution at various sites from Downtown to Oceanside.
• A fabulous group mitzvah opportunity.
• A wonderful cause for your donations of non-perishable food and/or dollars to assure food is distributed to those in need.

A key group of kids between the ages of 14 and 17 have been hand selected to serve on a Student Leadership Committee. With the support of JFS staff and a hands-on Parents Advisory group, they will be approaching the Food Pantry as a business. They will be involved with all aspects of running the Food Pantry -- from budgets to grant writing, food drives and distribution, and inventory control to supplemental food purchasing. Finally, they will provide leadership for younger children and supervision to other groups that come to work in the food pantry. The Youth Food Pantry will enable JFS to expand food collection and distribution from 5,000 bags a year to close to 10,000 bags.
