We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with animals or who would like to help the animals at the shelter through administrative duties that facilitate animal related projects. The work at the County Animal Shelters is both challenging and satisfying.

Volunteers perform and invaluable service in the operation of this unique county department.

This Department provides animal cares services for approximately three quarters of the population of San Diego including, in addition to the unincorporated area, seven contract cities - Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Poway, San diego, Santee, and Solana Beach.

We accomplish this task with highly trained motivated staff and volunteers at all three animal care facilities in Bonita, Carlsbad, and San Diego.

How do I get started?

There are many jobs available. The first step in becoming a Volunteer is to decide what you want to do!

You can obtain a Volunteer Application by downloading one from this site, or you can call the Volunteeer Recruitment Line at 619-767-2782 and leave your mailing address on the voice mail.

All prospective volunteers must attend a three-hour orientation. The orientation will provide an introduction to our Volunteer Program, an overview of our services and Philosophies and will give you details regarding expectations involved with each position.

After the Orientation, you will then be scheduled for a class that will provide the training you need to perform the volunteer work you wish to do. You will also be assigned to a mentor (seasoned volunteer) to guide you through your first few volunteer assignments.
