Notes

In 1999, through the generous support of the community, the ARL began spaying and neutering pets on-site prior to adoption. Since February of 2000, the ARL has spayed or neutered thousands of pets.

With two veterinarians on staff, ARL pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before adoption. With a grant from Prairie Meadows, the ARL has also started the "Spay the Mother" program. This program provides people who bring litters of puppies or kittens to the ARL a spay certificate to have the mother dog or cat spayed at no cost to them.

The ARL believes an aggressive spay and neuter program is the only way for Iowa to become a no-kill society without turning away pets.
