"All services are virtually free within ZL's network of health facilities in Haiti. Patients need only pay a registration fee that costs less than US$2.50 (about 150 HTG). Thereafter, patients have access to a variety of services, including surgery, cancer care, family planning and other needs.
On March 11, 1996, Zanmi Lasante (ZL) was legally registered as a local nonprofit organization in Haiti. In 2002, ZL officially began working within the institutions of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP). Although Partners In Health, based in Boston, MA, has been operating in Haiti since the early 1980s, ZL is one of the largest and most successful nonprofit organizations in Haiti. ZL is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations working in Haiti, and has become one of the largest health care providers in Haiti. ZL's first health care facility was established in Cange in the Central Plateau, and since then has expanded its services to 15 public hospitals and clinics throughout the Central Plateau and Bas Artibonite, serving a direct population of 1.3 million people.
As a member of the OnePIH family, ZL is the first and largest established sister organization of PIH. As a locally registered entity, ZL has the autonomy to seek its own funding and has its own board of directors. ZL accounts for half of PIH's funding portfolio and receives technical, administrative, and financial support from the Boston-based organization. ZL and PIH work closely together on funding opportunities and program management. Technical experts from ZL have also helped PIH set up programs in other countries, such as Peru, Rwanda, Malawi, and Liberia following the Ebola outbreak.
ZL follows the Haitian government as one of the largest employers in Haiti, with more than 6,600 employees, approximately 99% of whom are Haitian or of Haitian descent and 53% of whom are women. The majority of staff (36.91%) are Multipurpose Community Health Workers (ASCPs), consisting of 2,412 people, followed by operations staff (27.27%), or 1,826 people, and then nursing staff (15.72%), or 1,053 employees.
