Notes

From the web site:

This unique ministry was initiated during September
of 1997 through the collaborative efforts of a consortium
involving several faith-based action groups and some
local churches. The focus of the ministry is to provide
reliable, low-cost transportation to families in need
of dependable vehicles in order to get to available jobs,
transport their children to school and day-care, doctor
visits, etc. Changes in the welfare laws towards the end
of the last decade resulted in thousands of families being
removed from the welfare rolls to enter the work force.
It became readily apparent that one of the primary issues
for people entering the work-force was the lack of public
transportation to available jobs. The Wheels To Work ministry
has helped to address this need by providing approximately
500 vehicles to qualified families since its inception.

The concept of the ministry is relatively simple - donations
of good, used vehicles are solicited, those vehicles which
are suited for family use are identified, then inspected
and repaired as needed and re-donated to qualified families.
Wheels To Work collaborates with several faith-based social
service agencies in order to qualify families to receive
vehicles through the ministry. Applicants must be receiving
some form of state financial assistance and have small
children that require transportation to school or daycare.
Additionally, they are screened to ensure they have the
resources to properly maintain the vehicle and pay for
insurance, repairs, etc.

Having reliable transportation has enabled these people
to obtain and/or maintain employment, (or even locate
more suitable employment) while reducing their daily
commute time by as much as 60% . This, in turn, allows
them to spend more time with their families and helps
to stabilize family relationships. Over the years, the
impact of having reliable transportation has enabled
families to improve their financial situation to the
point where several of the clients who have received
vehicles through this ministry have actually re-donated
their vehicle back to the ministry so that it could be
used to benefit another family.

The need for transportation in the Twin Cities area far
exceeds our ability to supply vehicles to those families
who need a car. We are in desperate need of donations of
good, used vehicles to help meet this need. By donating
your car to Wheels to Work, you can touch someone?s life
with Christian compassion in a practical and meaningful
way.

can help us to help a family become self-sufficient by
meeting their transportation needs.
