FROM THE WEBSITE:

Our Mission

Pets America saves the lives of pets and the people who love them
by providing educational programs about emergency preparedness and
disaster relief services for pet owners.

Through Pet First Aid & Disaster Response workshops, Pets America
teaches people how to care for their animals before, during, and after
an emergency. And, by collaborating with communities nationwide, Pets
America-trained volunteers are helping ensure that pets are included in
local emergency management plans.

DISASTER RESPONSE SERVICES:

Emergency Planning and Disaster Response

Emergency Management Community Partnership Program

Pets America trains volunteers to collaborate with cities, counties,
and councils of government to provide pet-friendly shelters for pet
owners (shelters established on the same site as shelters for people).
Pets America can assist communities in writing disaster plans that
include pets and establishing Memoranda of Understanding with
response agencies. The organization also works with Emergency
Managers to ensure that all necessary supplies and well-trained
volunteers are available to assist families with pets with
evacuations and pet-friendly sheltering needs.

In Central Texas, Pets America is working in partnership with the
Central Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross to establish a model
for pet-friendly shelters that can be implemented nationally to save
lives. By allowing pet owners to evacuate with their pets, countless
animal and human lives can be saved. Volunteers must be well-trained
in emergency management, and training will continue in Texas
throughout 2007. Send us an email if you're interested in becoming
an approved disaster response team volunteer or if you'd like
planning assistance for your community!
