The National Weather Service welcomes volunteers who have an interest in severe weather spotting to become part of the SkyWarn program. The training is free and open to the public. You will be given a Severe Weather Spotters Guide and trained on weather events similar to those listed in the guide. After you attend the training, you may have the opportunity to call the NWS several times a month to report "ground truth" weather information for what is actually happening near your house. Reporting severe weather phenomena will be for events like peak wind speeds, heavy rainfall, potentially severe thunderstorms like large hail or damaging wind, flooding, ice or snow storms, etc. The information you report will be used in the NWS warning program, which can help protect the lives and property of you and your community.
