Notes

Our CERT program has developed its own 501(c)(3)status whose funds are to be used exclusively for training. Our group participates in numerous civic activities such as preparedness fairs, safety meetings, community gatherings, county fair, city fairs, etc. They have instituted a community outreach program focused on Map Your Neighborhood. We meet monthly for additional training and have a Spring barbecue and a Fall Awards Banquet to recognize achievements.

Brief Description: The CERT program in Yamhill is designed to provide area residents with an opportunity to make a contribution to their community by being part of a legitimate and needed community service organization. The intent of the organization is to provide preparedness training to individuals and form those trained individuals into neighborhood teams. It is anticipated that during and immediately following a major emergency or disaster these trained individuals will look after and care for their families, evaluate the status of their neighborhood, and then if possible, be available to offer assistance to professional responders. Our members understand the value of citizen preparedness and wish to share that knowledge and expertise with others.

Our program is consistent with the National CERT program and is open to all residents over the age of 14, at no charge. Graduates are provided a modest set of equipment and an indentification card. Regional emergency service agencies are being made aware of these teams and their abilities, and the fact that they can be a vital asset in responding to a real-world event. Our program covers the entire county and our goal is to train and develop multiple teams in each of our ten cities. Once developed we will retain the teams through a program of on-going training and community involvement.

National:
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.

The CERT course is taught in the community by a trained team of first responders who have completed a CERT Train-the-Trainer course conducted by their state training office for emergency management, or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI), located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. CERT training includes disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue operations.

Over the next two years, the CERT program aims to double the number of participants, with over 400,000 individuals completing the 20 plus hours of training. Train-the-Trainer sessions will be held in all 56 states and territories over the next year to expand the program throughout the United States.
