Haiti Disaster Response:

MSN has partnered with Haiti Children Project, www.haitichildrenproject.org, to handle the logistics of moving medical supplies and volunteer teams into and out of Jeremie, Haiti and other locations within the country.

The January earthquake that struck Haiti has led us back to our roots. In searching for the best way to respond to that massive disaster, the Lord led us to partner with Wade McGuinn and Haiti Children Project, www.haitichildrenproject.org. HCP is an Advance Project of the United Methodist Church. They currently operate an orphanage for 29 kids in Jeremie and are building a new one to house up to 100. Jeremie is 140 miles west of Port au Prince and did not sustain any direct damage from the quake. However, when Port au Prince went down so did their supply chain. Within days after the quake the orphans literally had nothing to eat. We were instrumental in locating a private pilot to fly 3000 lbs of rice and beans directly into Jeremie. Since then there have been a dozen such flights delivering much needed food, medical supplies and volunteers to Haiti. Obviously, the long term needs are great. The requirement for supplies is even more urgent now that upwards of 40,000 “refugees” from Port au Prince have been sent to the Jeremie area. MSN will continue to handle the logistics of getting the supplies and volunteers into and out of the country.

In order to sustain the work we are doing locally and internationally we need help. Your prayers, time and funding would be most appreciated. We are looking for one-time donations but really need monthly partnerships of $20 to $100. Please prayerfully consider helping us in this time of great need.

MSN is an inter-denominational, 501(c)(3), faith-based Disaster Relief
Organization (DRO). Our roots stem from providing disaster relief and supplies to the Bahama Islands after hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in the fall of 2004. We organized and led short term mission teams to Eleuthera and Grand Bahama Island. We also worked with local missionaries for the sourcing, procurement and delivery of building supplies throughout the winter and summer of 2005. Then hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast on the morning of August 29, 2005 devastating the coast of Mississippi and flooding New Orleans. Katrina became the worst natural disaster in the history of the US.

MSN organized and led its first team to Pass Christian, MS on October 17, seven weeks after the storm. The devastation was unimaginable. We have been back on average once a month since then. As the relief efforts have transitioned from muck-out and clean up to rebuild, the need for skilled teams to help families get back into their homes has grown tremendously. We are seeing more and more cases of families who have used all their available resources/money to get their homes partially rebuilt with no way to get them finished. While there are a number of faith-based organizations and churches helping with unmet needs often they do not have the capability or resources to see a project through to completion.

Our concept is a simple one. We identify, through existing case management channels, those families with the most critical unmet needs. We then lock arms with that family to conduct the needs assessment, fund raising, mission team recruitment, materials procurement and project management of their rebuild. We stay with them through home dedication and move in. Along the way by attending to the families physical needs we have an opportunity to tend to their emotional and spiritual needs as well. Helping others, expecting nothing in return, is the highest form of exhibiting the grace and love of Christ.
