Notes
10/31/07 UPDATE:
Per direct call to the Commander Master Chief in charge of sheltering families, they have closed their shelter operations effective 10/28/07.
Two Navy families lost their homes.
Family Readiness Group Coordinator Larelle Gonzales is currently distributing donated supplied from Do Your Part to individual families affected by the fires.
She will continue to collect donations and assist her military neighbors.
-------------------------------------------------
Per direct phone contact to Larelle Gonzales, FRG (Family Readiness Group for the USS Asheville):
360 evacuees on base housed in empty barracks
Some are in tents
Many military families are being sent to AZ and UT
More families are on the way
Evacuees at this base are from Harris Fire which flared up and is moving towards Camp Pendleton (they may need to evac that base)
They are "overwhelmed" per the Shelter Operation Commander
Whatever overages of supplies received will be delivered to
the other 4 military bases that are in San Diego
Many of the service men and women in the Gulf are completely
unaware of what is happening in San Diego and have no news of
the situation
Larelle has taken in many families off and on in the last days
and is currently sheltering a young couple - The wife just had
major surgery - She got out alone with immediate evac notice -
No time to take anything but her cat.
Many families left with nothing packed
Authorities have no idea when the evac order will be lifted - This
could be up to 5 days more or less
