MEALS, BLANKETS OFFERED TO JEWELL-AREA RESIDENTS

Hot food, blankets and a place to warm up will be available for residents of the Jewell/Elsie area enduring power outages and other problems stemming from the recent winter storms.

Clatsop County is offering a limited number of self-contained “Heater Meals” and blankets to the public Monday, Dec. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Nehalem Valley Substation at 79532 Highway 202 in Jewell.

On Tuesday, Dec. 23, the county and American Red Cross will offer meals, coffee and a place to get warm at Jewell School at 83874 Highway 103. The school will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and two meals will be served - from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and another from 4 to 6 p.m.

Debris disposal site opened in Astoria
Clatsop County residents can dispose of storm debris at Clatsop Transfer and Disposal, operated by Western Oregon Waste at 1790 Williamsport Road in Astoria. The announcement was made by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

Primarily a logging community, Jewell is situated near the Clatsop State Forest. Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area is a wildlife preserve near Jewell run by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is known for its Roosevelt elk.
