LTel Received the following email forwarded by Ellen Malin in Sen. Hollingsworth's office 12/12/07:
The biggest need right now for school supplies is the computers. We have students falling behind in their work, because they do not have a computer. The Guidance Office staff and I have been keeping up a stock of paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, etc. for the students to take as they need. I also purchased a few of the USB Flash drives as a, "band aid" to help get them through. However, we have students going to the Library, open classrooms, and friends houses using their computers (all around bus schedules). Unfortunately, this has not proven to be as effective as they were hoping.
I have already e-mailed Apple, Inc about getting IPods for the students and Texas Instruments about replacing calculators. The students have formal dances coming up and many of the seniors may not be able to purchase a year book or participate in their senior rights of passage such as the S enior Banquet, Grad Night, etc. as the family money has to be spent on rebuilding and restocking their homes. We have done a small collection of money and purchased planners for home work and projects to be written down in and I am assembling a list of the text books that were lost in the fires.
Since Steele Canyon is a new Charter School, we do not yet have the ADA monies in and need help recovering the cost of the lost text books. Otherwise, students are responsible for book fines, which is what the normal process is, but due to the fire we are trying to help cover these fees. The PTO has helped cover costs of some of the school supplies and the Sports Booster Club has covered the cost of replacing PE uniforms and sports uniforms/equipment.
Let me know if you need more information. I only have about 19 signed releases from the 40 families. We are also just hearing about homes that were partially damaged, so the students did not ask for help. however, their family computer was damaged to the point that it does not work.
Thank you for your assistance,
Teresa Greenhalgh :)
