- Since its founding in 1982, the GGG/AFC has been a vocal
advocate for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Our
vision is to be a leader in providing affordable quality
care, education, awareness and support for those affected
by Alzheimer’s and other dementing illnesses. Our mission
is to aggressively realize this vision by providing quality
adult day health care, family support and caregiving training,
family and community education, advocacy, crisis intervention,

FROM THE 211 DATABASE:
Provides disaster relief services to include adult day care for
dementia and alzheimer patients, and free respi-care day care
for Seniors.
FROM THE SITE:
Founded in 1982 by Dr. George G. Glenner, a UCSD physician
and research pathologist specializing in Alzheimer’s disease,
and his wife Joy Glenner, the organization was born out of
a heartfelt response to a late-night call from a caregiver
struggling with his wife’s dementia. At the end of his
emotional rope, the caregiver wanted to end both their
lives. The Glenners called the authorities, who came to
the family’s aid and discovered the caregiver with a loaded
gun.
The next day The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers
was created to help individuals struggling with similar
situations.
Today, Glenner Centers throughout San Diego help hundreds of
individuals remain socially and physically active in loving
home-like adult day health centers, thus delaying premature
institutional placement. Weekly family education services
help families understand the disease and to support their
role as caregiver. Additionally, collaborative partnerships
with leading San Diego institutions position Glenner on the
cutting edge of research, education, community advocacy and
care.
