Mission
Disaster Response Training Programs
In keeping with UMCOR’s mission to provide response and recovery to people and communities when disaster strikes, we have designed training at every level—local church, district and conference—to better enable everyone to be faithful to God’s call to bring hope to those who are suffering. It is UMCOR’s belief that the ability to respond efficiently and effectively depends on the preparation of our “heart and hands.”

Notes

3/5/12 - Message from Amelia via AVOAD
Dear AWFC Disaster Responders:

For an update to the situation in Verbena, something that would be especially helpful would be folks with trailers and trucks that could help haul away debris. It doesn't sound like the county is going to take care of much of it.

Other than that, chainsaws and debris pullers is what is needed and probably will be most of the week.

Contact Steve Reneau at Verbena UMC for assignments. (See "other contacts")

From Website:
...The State VOAD has divided the state into regions, which will function as Long Term Recovery committees in the rural areas of the states, especially those we are working in the Demopolis District. This larger organization will provide the vehicle to pool resources, provide case management and strengthen partnerships.

At this time we are providing repair, supplies and personnel into the Demopolis District, Elmore County and Washington County. We have begun discussion of children’s recovery camps in the Demopolis area. Training to work those camps will be announced soon. We are also partnering with Lutheran Disaster Services to provide the week long Camp Noah in heavily affected areas.

Chainsaw teams and a presence are needed in Myrtlewood. As the weeks pass, the depression, anxiety and frustration of recovery will be evident in these communities. Pastoral care and counseling will be needed as well.

As we move in positive directions towards recovery, let’s remember and actively support our pastors and congregations who are working tirelessly in their communities and have experienced loss. Amelia Fletcher

Below are updates on Soul Chapel UMC and Bethlehem UMC, both damaged from the storms that hit last Friday, April 22.

From Rev. John Bonner, District Superintendent of the Demopolis District

The plan for Soul Chapel is to worship again at Geiger UMC. This is not a regular preaching Sunday for that church, but that was the invitation and encouragement given to them. We are working on the use of a building for the future, plans for this will be announced at a later date.
