About this facility

Mission
Midwest Computer Forensic Lab provides Certified Computer Forensics and Data Recovery for State and Local Law Enforcement, Litigation professionals, and private citizens. The equipment and software that we use is state of the art and we are able to recover digital data from computer systems what have been damaged by floods, fire, etc. We are located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and have been hard hit by the recent flooding. Several businesses and residents didn't have time to remove their computer systems to higher ground, and many were flooded with several feet of mucky river water. Midwest Computer Forensic Lab has the ability to recover data for people who didn't have a backup of the data. Personal digital photos, tax records, and business records can sometimes be recovered from the submerged hard drive if the user handles the hard drive properly. The hard drive can not be air dried as the flood waters will cause the internal data platters to corrode. Our main goal is that most average people would not be able to afford this service as normally hard drive recovery would be about $2000 per hard drive. People would then have to painfully realize that the years of family photos would be lost. We will provide this service at a substantially reduced price, and if we can't recover the data because of severe corrosion, the flood victim would not have to pay. We will work with low income people... If there is no other way to recover their family digital pictures.. we will cover the cost for them. We will not [cover the cost for recovering] music files, emails, or games. See below for info about what this company can do for disaster survivors. See also suggestions for how to recover computer data from flood damage.

Notes

Many people just don't know that their data can possibly be recovered. When the cleanup begins, they just roll the family computer in the dumpster to be gone forever.

Midwest Computer Forensic Lab offers these tips for people with water-damaged computers:

• Never assume that data is unrecoverable
• Do not try to power-up damaged equipment
• Do not shake or disassemble
• Do not attempt to clean or dry
• Remove the media from the system and immediately place it in an air-tight
plastic bag, such as a Ziploc(R) brand bag.

*Do not leave the media out in the air to dry. Do not open the media. Air allows the platters to corrode.*

Allowing the hard drive or other media to dry out may cause additional damage, which may make the recovery more difficult, if not impossible.
