Release Date: June 30, 2008
Release Number: 1768-041
MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin residents affected by recent flooding can request the assistance of a lawyer through a toll-free legal aid line operated by the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, emergency officials announced.
The service was organized by Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Bar of Wisconsin to assist residents of the 29 counties included in the president's disaster declaration.
Those with legal issues arising from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that struck Wisconsin in June and who are unable to afford a lawyer can request assistance by dialing 877-947-5291, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Messages can be left at any time and will be answered within 48 hours. Callers should say they need flood-related legal assistance.
Legal services available to qualifying individuals include:
Assistance with issues concerning state and federal benefits.
Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims.
Help with home repair contracts.
Replacement of wills and other legal documents destroyed in the disaster.
Assistance with consumer protection, remedies and procedures.
Counseling on mortgage-foreclosure problems.
Counseling on landlord/tenant problems.
Any work performed through the bar association cannot result in any monies for either side.
