Release Date: August 20, 2008
Release Number: 1773-056

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The federal/state Disaster Recovery Center in Winfield, Mo., will close on Wednesday, Aug. 27, the same day as registration ends for FEMA assistance to Missourians affected by the severe storms and flooding between June 1 and July 18.

Missourians in the counties of Andrew, Cass, Clark, Gentry, Greene, Holt, Johnson, Lewis, Lincoln, Linn, Livingston, Marion, Nodaway, Pike, Ralls, St. Charles, Stone, Taney, Vernon, and Webster have less than one week to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster assistance.

Recovery officials urge homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private nonprofits with disaster-related damage in the disaster designated counties to register at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. Online, register at www.fema.gov. Telephone lines are open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The deadline to apply for assistance is Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

The Disaster Recovery Center at Winfield-Foley Fire Department, 2663 E. Hwy 47, Winfield, MO 63389, will be open through Aug. 27 for people needing help with registration. The DRC is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday; and closed on Sunday.
Visitors should register with FEMA prior to visiting the DRC. Visitors will find information on:

FEMA and state disaster assistance programs;
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans and how to complete the loan application;
Smart building techniques to reduce damage from future floods; and
Flood insurance.
Aug. 27 is also the deadline for submitting applications for SBA disaster loans. There is no requirement to take a loan, but the application is a critical step in the registration process and may determine eligibility for certain FEMA/state programs.
