About this facility

Mission
Mercy Chefs is dedicated to feeding high quality professional prepared meals to victims, volunteers and first responders in time of national emergencies and natural disasters. We recruit industry professionals as Mercy Chefs and train local church based relief teams. We will support other ministries from time to time with food service in pursuit of their mission. We are an independent, non denominational, faith based nonprofit organization founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to more efficiently and effectively respond to disaster needs. We are an all volunteer relief ministry completely funded by individuals and corporate support.

Notes

Hurricane Ike and Mercy Chefs in Beaumont Hurricane Ike blasted the Texas and Louisiana coast a week ago as a cat 3 monster. Waves and wind and walls of water left millions without power and whole towns utterly devastated. Mercy Chefs was prestaged in Dallas and ready to go the morning after. This just on the heals of feeding 5600 people for a week in St Bernard parish after Gustav. Mercy chefs, traveling with Operation Blessing, entered Beaumont and began immediately feeding first responders. We fed the Texas National Guard, Wildlife and Fisheries, State Highway Patrol, and many other state and local law enforcement. We even fed some animal rescue responders. For all we prepared the first hot meal they had eaten since the storm. Some even on day six had their first hot meal with us. It was a special event for our staff when wed night 150 bone weary guard with the 112th cane in after we had closed the kitchen. When we heard they had not had anything but mre's for a week. So we reopened and fed them and fed them well. The next day they honored us with a coining ceremony and asked us to pray for the troops. Several of the Mercy Chefs said it was one of the most moving experiences in their lives. As power returned to Beaumont and the mandatory evacuation was lifted Mercy Chefs is in contact with God's Pit Crew, now working in Pasadena Texas. We may all be moving into Galveston next week. We are waiting to see where the greatest need will be in the near future so we may best use the resources we have left. Mercy Chef Curt Hencye has wrapped up 23 days of service and returned home. When he was not supporting the MC effort Curt was working in his Calvary Chapel relief role and clearing and chain sawing and blue tarping. Chef Debbie Lowe continues in a support role in Beaumont with volunteer and work order management while still feeding the volunteers . She will stay on and complete a two week tour. Mercy Chef Dave Van Abel with Feed My Sheep is on hold in Milwaukee to rotate in as needed to support any long term response in Galveston if needed.

Bay St Louis, Mississippi - Mercy Chefs is on hand with Calvary Chapels and Pastor Frank Griffin for what was to be a family day in the park for those still rebuilding from Katrina this Saturday 8/30. Mercy Chef Dave Van Abel flew in from Milwaukee and our kitchen volunteer team from Calvary Chapel Sarasota was in route. But recent developments in the Caribbean have altered the plans. Chef Dave will stay and assess potential future sites for a response and make contacts with local responders. Mercy One, our state of the art mobile kitchen, will be diverted to Georgia and stand off until the storm track is more predictable. We will continue to prepare and stage for relief along the Gulf Coast.
