Hurricane Gustav Relief and Recovery Fund
Sept. 5, 2008 (Day 4 after storm)
Some Foundation staff members surveyed the devastation across South Louisiana yesterday to gather information for tuning our Hurricane Gustav response. Following the trail of Gustav, they found that Houma and Baton Rouge appear to have suffered the most damage. In each city, winds had swept away roofs, particularly of houses near open spaces, where the 110-mile gusts had clear paths of attack. Also battered were Thibodaux and Donaldsonville, while Morgan City, Franklin and Lafayette were in relatively good shape.
South Louisiana residents are rightly proud of their resilience. For example, Donaldsonville city employees had worked through all their official clothes and resorted to wearing T-shirts to cut and remove trees. Louisiana National Guardsmen from Belle Chasse, after evacuating people in school buses from Houma to Shreveport before the storm, turned around quickly to create a drive-thru line for food, ice, water and tarps at Stephenville, north of Morgan City (see above). “We’re gypsies,” said one guardsman.

The people are tough, but that doesn't mean they can’t use a little help. To aid them, the Foundation has established a Hurricane Gustav Relief and Recovery Fund. Join us in helping them rebuild a stronger South Louisiana by donating to GustavLouisiana.org at this link: http://www.braf.org/site/c.jfISK0OxFkG/b.4453149/

The Fund

The Hurricane Gustav Relief and Recovery Fund will benefit all individuals impacted and/or displaced by Hurricane Gustav, as these individuals will face numerous challenges related to housing, food, education, healthcare, and other basic necessities. This fund will support organizations and programs that endeavor to meet the critical needs of these residents, assist communities impacted by a sudden influx of displaced individuals, and assist in the planning and rebuilding of infrastructure to provide basic human services to residents as they return to impacted areas. The Foundation will work with leadership from both governmental and private entities to provide resources to programs and projects that benefit impacted communities in their recovery processes.

Donations to the Hurricane Gustav Relief and Recovery Fund can be made using any of the following options:
