January 2011 - Flood

City crews have stocked sand pile and sand bag locations throughout the city for any resident or business owner who wants to protect their property from flood damage. Sand and sand bags are provided at no charge; you must bring your own shovel. The following locations are stocked:

SE 88th Ave just south of Holgate Blvd in the parking lot at Lents Park,
SE 108th Ave and Foster Road, just south of Foster on the south side of the bridge,
SE 111th Ave and Harold St at the southeast corner of the intersection, and
SW 42nd Ave and Vermont St in the lower parking lot of Gabriel Park.

Additional closures
Early tomorrow morning city crews will stage barricades for other anticipated road closures, including Southeast Cherry Blossom Drive between Stark and Market streets and Southeast 92nd Avenue between Division Street and Powell Boulevard. Crews will monitor these areas and will be dispatched immediately to close the streets if they flood.
City officials are asking for the public's assistance in identifying other flooded streets or intersections. The public can call (503) 823-1700 to report a particular location, and we're told crews will be dispatched to that location as soon as possible.
"The public is advised to obey street closures and barricades to protect life and property," the Portland Bureau of Transportation reports. "Motorists who ignore street closures and drive through barricades face a $360 fine. People who live and work on flooded streets that are closed are also subject to the fine if they drive through the barricades."

WARNING & ALERTS -

Sign up for Public Alerts to ensure timely emergency notification
Multnomah County uses an automated “reverse 911” alert and notification system that can advise residents of an emergency through their telephone landlines. While this service will reach any person with access to their landline at the time of the call, it’s become increasingly common for people to only carry cellular telephone service.

To ensure the county can reach you with an emergency message, sign up for Public Alerts – an optional service that allows you to add your e-mail, cell phone number and additional contact information to the secure contact database. Through Public Alerts, you can receive notification e-mails and text messages, and be contacted at multiple phone numbers, which increases the likelihood that you’ll receive timely notice of floods or other events.
