NECHAMA ANTICIPATES DEPLOYING TO THE RED RIVER VALLEY IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS FOR FLOOD CLEAN-UP!
NECHAMA, the Minnesota-based flood relief organization, was in Grand Forks, North Dakota for the massive floods of 1997. This year, the Red River will flood again. The National Weather Service is predicting “record flooding possible at many locations on the Red River of the North and its tributaries, with major spring flooding expected for most of the Red River Basin.”
While we aren’t sure yet how much damage this will cause, we need to be prepared.
Several conditions today are identical to those that preceded the ’97 flood:
•Greater than average rainfall in autumn, which left the ground saturated
•Greater than average snowfall – December 2008 saw a record 30” snowstorm
•Colder than average winter temperatures – the snow has not melted gradually
WE ARE IN TOUCH WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES, ASSESSING OUR NEED FOR FUNDS AND VOLUNTEERS, AND EXPECT TO BE CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. PLEASE KEEP A LOOKOUT ON www.nechama.org AND WATCH YOUR E-MAIL FOR FURTHER UPDATES.
Please contact NECHAMA @ 763-732-0610 or info@nechama.org with any questions you have at this point.
