Emailed Newsletter 4/10/09:
Greetings,
This was going to be an update on the Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team relief effort in Bridge City, Texas. However because of the fierce storm system and damage created by it over the last couple of days across the Midwest section of the U.S. we felt we needed to get this information to you now and we'll send the Bridge City update in the near future.
As you've probably heard by now, many areas across the Midwest have experienced major damage due to an extreme weather system that moved across the U.S. the past couple of days.
An EF-3 tornado swept through Mena, Arkansas Thursday killing 3 and injuring over 30. Over 600 structures are being reported as damaged in Polk County.
The community of Bowie, Texas and the surrounding areas are now dealing with their towns being almost completely destroyed by wildfires on Thursday and into yesterday.
Midwest City, Oklahoma is experiencing much of the same as their community has lost over 100 houses in the fires with over 49 people being injured. As if all of this was not enough......Yesterday, Murfreesboro, Tennessee received the effects of this weather system as a large tornado touched down damaging/destroying over 250 houses in the Murfreesboro/Rutherford County area, killing 2 and injuring over 41.
Langston, AL. (Lake Guntersville) also experienced a tornado on Friday with dozens of homes damaged.
***NOTE***The National Weather Service is calling for additional Severe Weather later this weekend!!
The Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team has been closely monitoring and is contacting the churches in these disaster areas. We will be helping in whatever capacity is needed.
We know that as always there are a few things that are and will be needed and with your help we can get started right away.
1. PRAYERS.....Please be in prayer along with DRT for those that have been affected by these disasters. Many have lost the lives of family members, others have lost everything they own, some have lost what they know as their entire hometowns. This is going to be an extremely difficult time for them.
2. FUNDS.... Funding is needed to help with this as well as other disasters throughout 2009. The Disaster Response Team provides the food that is cooked for the community and volunteers as well as helping to provide building material for those without/under insured. We also help to provide "Packs of Love" Care Packs, School Packs, household items for those in need and funding for the congregations in disaster areas when it is available. Please be prayerful in your consideration of supporting this ministry. Without keeping our focus on GOD and all of us working together, our goal of bringing others to Christ through disaster relief would not be possible. Monthly donations, one time donations......or just whenever donations or always appreciated and VERY needed!
3. Volunteer.....Stay informed of help needed in the disaster areas. Check our website, blog, face book, twitter and your emails often for opportunities to assist those in need.
4. Share.....Please pass this email on to everyone you know, put it in your church bulletin....please help us get the word out that help is needed.
Blessings,
Mark and Laura Cremeans
