Legal Advocacy & Resource Center
Mission: LARC operates a statewide free legal hotline that serves as the primary entry point for low-income callers in the Greater Boston area who believe they are experiencing legal problems. LARC staff provide civil legal information as well as referrals to appropriate legal and social service agencies.
Volunteer Activities: Undergraduate and law students can receive training to staff the hotline or work on specific projects. Attorneys may volunteer to staff the hotline, call back clients on specific legal topics such as foreclosure, SSI or bankruptcy or join LARC's pro bono employment panel which provides low-income clients with legal assessment and advice over the telephone from their office.
Populations: LARC focuses on low-income households but does not restrict services; intake screeners use income guidelines to determine eligibility for free/reduced fee services.
Service Area: All of Massachusetts
Legal Areas: Housing, domestic relations, consumer, employment, Social Security, and public benefits
Requirements: To staff the hotline, a minimum of 3 hours/week for 4 months is preferred; to join the pro bono panel, a commitment of 2 hours every couple of months is adequate. Note: Employment panel is for telephone consultation only and from your own office. All encouraged. Bilingual (Spanish) attorneys needed.
