THE SALVATION ARMY RESPONDS TO SEVERE FLOODING IN WEST VIRGINIA Send this page to a friend

Released 12 May 2009

Charleston, WV: The Salvation Army is serving the flooded area of West Virginia (Mingo and Wyoming Counties). There is a mobile feeding unit (canteen) stationed at the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department in Hanover West Virginia, a canteen at the Larry Joe Harless Community center in Gilbert, West Virginia, and a further two canteens roving the counties. Each of these canteens are serving meals to victims and relief workers. In addition we will also be giving away Clean-up Kits (broom, mop and other cleaning supplies), Comfort Kits (toiletries) and food boxes.

The Salvation Army Went into Hanover WV at 7 PM on Saturday evening and have been feeding the public, providing cleanup supplies, and offering spiritual care to the victims of the devastation, On Saturday morning at 3:30 AM the creeks around the southern part of Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming counties left their banks. The run-off waters around these communities rolled through the town of Hanover, taking everything in its wake. In the words of one survivor "in a split second I grabbed my mother and we got out as water rose chest high." If he had hesitated, his mother would not be here today.

The Salvation Army was in communication with the 911 director of Wyoming County staged in Pineville early Saturday afternoon. The Army's Beckley disaster team arrived in Hanover early Saturday evening. The only route not cut off by water was through Welch. On Saturday night the Salvation Army's Disaster team served 120 people, many of whom had nothing to eat since 3 am that morning.

On Sunday the Salvation Army served breakfast lunch and supper to more than 500 people, and delivered 143 Clean-up Kits to the victims of flood water in and around Hanover WV.

In conjunction with the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) the Army will continue to feed and also provide further Clean-up Kits and supplies to the flood victims.

In addition the Salvation Army is providing for one family a much needed refuge in a local hotel, having lost their home entirely in the flood waters.

Donation of supplies can be brought to the Hanover VFD. Monetary Donations can be sent to The Salvation Army Po Box 1573 Beckley WV 25801. Donations can also be made by calling 1 800 SAL ARMY, or www.salvationarmy.org designating your donation Salvation Army Disaster Relief West Virginia Floods.

The Greatest need is cleaning supplies and drinking water as well as monetary donations to assist with service to the victims of the Mothers day Weekend Flood.

The Hanover VFD is providing clothing to the victims of the flood. No further donations of clothes are necessary at this time.
