MARIETTA, Ga.-- It's not home, but it's dry. The 215 people sleeping on cots at the Cobb County Civic Center have similar stories: when everything you own is underwater, you pack what you can and head for safety.
The Red Cross now expects to keep shelters open for up to two weeks. Spokesman Ruben Brown says, "We'll be here as long as they need us. This is their home right now, and we want them to be safe."
There are several Red Cross Shelters up and running right now: The Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta, Clairmont Hills Presbyterian Church is Decatur, The First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, The Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency in Woodstock, and the Pentecostal Worship Center in Summerville. Brown says the Red Cross will open more shelters if needed.
Cobb County Sheriff Deputies were on duty at the Civic Center. They say it was a quiet night. Just before 5:00AM, a shelter volunteer handed 11Alive's Julie Wolfe a list. "This is what they really need right now," he said. The shelter has run out of: soap, socks, towels, toothpaste, pampers, sanitary napkins, and mouth wash. You can drop off donations at the Civic Center. You can also donate money to the Red Cross at www.redcross.org.
