About this facility

Mission
The West Georgia SPCA started out as a group of volunteers at the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter in 2004 and we later became an independent non-profit corporation in April 2006 so we could continue to grow and meet the needs of the shelter and the community. We help homeless dogs, cat and rabbits get a second chance for a wonderful new life. We have a great relationship with the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter's staff and together we strive to create new programs to bring people and pets together. Over the last few years our volunteers and the county shelter staff have worked together to make great improvements which have drastically raised the adoption rate and lowered the euthanasia rate in Douglas County. By working together, the Douglas County Animal Control Shelter is now dramatically improved since the County took over shelter management in 2003. There is always room for improvement, though... Douglas County needs a modern, new animal shelter!

Notes

FROM THE WEBSITE 10/5/09:

Some pets came to FEMA on their own searching for help after the Georgia floods.

A big thank you to Farnam Pet Products for donating a generous supply of Just Born Puppy and Kitten Milk Replacer. It means a lot to have the support of a wonderful company like Farnam!

We have received some emergency funding from PetFinder.com to assist with displaced animals from the flooding. If you need assistance with boarding your pets while you get your house back to a safe condition or while you find a new residence, we can help. Please call us at (770)272-3178 to request assistance.

9/24 FLOOD UPDATE:

Flood Update
Just a quick update... we have lost phone and internet access (we had to drive out with our laptops to find an open network to send this out), so if anyone needs to reach us for assistance, please call my cellphone at (678)457-7852.

See link above for photo of lost Basset

The Basset girl in the photo was found after the flooding - wet, hungry and exhausted in Winston. Please call me if you know anyone missing a female Basset.

The Douglas County Animal Control Shelter is in need of cat and dog food. Please call (770)942-5961 for more information or drop off your pet food donations there Tuesday-Saturday 10-5 or Sunday 2-5.

Atlanta West Animal Hospital is a designated FEMA emergency site for animals displaced from the flood. Please contact them at (770)459-2253 for more information.

We are expecting a delivery of puppy and kitten milk replacement but are having a difficult time getting it delivered with the roads being closed and washed out. If you are a shelter, rescue group, rescuer or a flood victim in need puppy or kitten milk, please call me at (678)457-7852 and I will let you know when it comes in.

We could use donations for boarding of displaced animals and pet food. Please donate if you can!
