KEENBROOK – Cold, gusty winds are whipping up a wildfire as it cuts a northwesterly path the the western edge of the San Bernardino National Forest.
The Sheep Fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the lower Cajon Pass and has swept across 3500 acres through Swarthout Canyon where three homes were destroyed.
New mandatory evacuations are being put in place Sunday morning in Wrightwood for the areas east of Heath Canyon and west of Heath Canyon between Lone Pine Canyon Rd. and Hwy 2. The remainder of Wrightwood is under voluntary evacuation.
Earlier evacuations were ordered for Lytle Creek, the Mountain Lakes RV Park and a sparsely populated area between Interstate 15 and Hess Road. An evacuation center was set up at Eisenhower High School in Rialto and another at the Victorville Fairgrounds. Large animals were taken to the Glen Helen Rodeo grounds and small pets to the Devore Animal Shelter.
In spite of air assaults and ground attacks, the fire had an extreme potential to grow. There is no predicted containment.
More than 1,000 firefighters have responded to the scene, but high winds are making the air attack tougher. (INT)
