About this facility

Mission
from website: Rebuilding homes - current projects - Chalmette, La. Volunteers are still chipping away at the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina nearly four years ago. Chalmette is in St. Bernard Parish, where this mega-disaster caused the levee failures that inundated homes throughout the parish with 6-20 feet of water. Over 200 parish residents lost their lives, and 100% percent of the homes were officially declared "uninhabitable." Brethren Disaster Ministries volunteers have repaired over 100 homes in the Chalmette area since January 2007. Read Not Forgotten, a reflection on Hurricane Katrina recovery by Walt Wiltschek, editor of Messenger. Housing Volunteers are staying at the volunteer house in Arabi. The house can accommodate 28 volunteers. Volunteers sleep on bunk beds with mattresses, with separate quarters for men and women. The house has 5 bathrooms and 6 showers. Volunteers must bring their own sheets, blankets, or bedroll. However, for those flying to the project, pillows and pillowcases are available. Meals Meals are prepared and shared in the house. Please note that volunteer groups are asked to include an assistant cook. Work Volunteers are doing major repair work including insulation, drywall, laminate flooring, roofing, painting, trim work, etc.
