UPDATE 8/18/06: They have no website
The Retreat House adjacent to the Bywater and Holy Spirit
Christian Community Church is open to volunteers needing
housing. Pastor Charles Boyle can provide leads/coordination
to other volunteer/church organizations doing
repairs/reconstruction on the Gulf in Hancock County.
Here and there they do receive donations of food, clothing,
building materials that are redirected to other groups in need
of those items. They are NOT set up to accept ongoing donations
nor do they do distribution.
The 'Retreat House' can house a maximum of 15 adults, and if you
have teens in your group can house a maximum of 15-20 volunteers.
Volunteers should contact Pastor Charles Boyle directly to
coordinate available housing.
There is no fee for your stay. You must provide and prepare your
own meals. They keep a pretty well stocked pantry, but most
volunteers that come through replace what they have used when
their trip comes to an end. They have a small kitchen with stove,
oven, microwave, pantry and refidgerator. Bedding is supplied.
There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms (each with a shower), as well
as one washer and one dryer accessible to volunteers.
This is a great option for volunteers looking for a quieter,
less crowded volunteer housing situation. Great for families and
serves as housing for overflow from other local volunteer camps
in the area.
According to Mrs. Boyle the influx of volunteers coming to the
Gulf has really slowed down and they desperately need skilled
labor to continue to be in service to the ravaged Gulf Coast.
