EMAIL from Sow-A-Seed 12/16/10:

Rosemina has 7 children with cholera. SAS was able to help with hospitalization. The children were accepted by and treated at Hopital de la Communaute Haitienne (HCH). Most of them were sent back home. Only one child remains hospitalized.

They were able to get water yesterday and today - so they have enough for about two weeks. The logistics director from HCH went to visit them to analyze the situation. His recommendation is that a hold be drilled to gather sullied water from wash, hands, etc....

What they need is:
1 - Funding to drill temp. hole
2 - Bathroom not usable and MUST be rebuilt. Also - for 1 bathroom for 86 kids plus about 10 employees just doesn't cut it. Funding needed. SAS can help with engineering.
3 - Port-a-potties must be installed for the kids to use in the meantime - as they have no where to go.
4 - Cleaning supplies - including clorox needed.

SAS can ensure follow through with this situation. I don't have a medical team to go over there right now, but we were able to arrange free hospitalization.

If anyone group wants to help with this project, please let me know. I will try to work on some funding for them on SAS end.

This orphanage is a 4 bdrm. house. There are 80 children ages 0-17 or 18 yr. old. There are 3-4 Caretakers.

One employee contracted Cholera likely from the outside. It is not known whether any of the children are sick.

Dr. Pilar Martin has instructed them on what to watch for Cholera symptoms and to take children directly to the hospital if they start showing any signs.

Their only water source is from the U.N. and they have an underground tank but no chlorination and no running plumbing in the house.

They do not have any electricity.

This orphanage has very poor conditions, not running water, not flashed toilet for 80 kids . I'm afraid kids are already with the disease.

Can somebody in PAP check there if they have appropriate resources to follow the hygiene measures, etc.?.. They require close monitoring

I appreciate if somebody on the ground can check there - better in person- and send me information about their status, prevention measures and help them , if needed . I would appreciate so much

you can tell you are referred by me

Thanks so much
