ACTED’s vocation is to support vulnerable populations affected by wars, natural disasters and/or economic and social crises, and to accompany them in building a better future; thus contributing to the Millennium Development Goals
Our Vision: Guaranteeing the Link between Emergency, Rehabilitation and Development
ACTED’s vision is to establish a link between emergency, rehabilitation and development.
Once basic needs have been covered, the population’s living conditions remain critical as our areas of intervention are among the poorest in the world.
We guarantee the sustainability of our interventions carried out during crises, through remaining on the field after the emergency and involving the communities, ACTED engages in a long-term support with a continued presence in the field the to break the poverty cycle and accompany the populations on their way to development.
Our experience
Today ACTED strives to share experiences and expertise with other actors working in development cooperation, with whom we share common values. ACTED has therefore joined Alliance2015, a partnership of seven like-minded non-government organisations working in the field of development cooperation and for the Millennium Development Goals (CESVI from Italy, Concern Worldwide from Ireland, Welthungerhilfe from Germany, Hivos from the Netherlands, IBIS from Denmark, People in Need from the Czech Republic). ACTED is also member of Voice, the European network representing 85 European non-governmental organisations active in humanitarian aid worldwide, as well of CoordinationSud, the French network for relief agencies. - Areas served

Haiti : Tropical storm Tomas: ACTED is on major alert

Pre-positioning of contingency stocks at the hands of the imminent arrival of tropical storm Tomas
The teams of ACTED have been mobilized since the last two weeks to respond to the cholera outbreak in Artibonite, Haitian region north of the capital, and are getting ready for the arrival of tropical storm Tomas that should hit Haitian shores during the night of Thursday to Friday.
ACTED has received more than 8,000 emergency shelter kits (composed of tarpaulins, ropes and poles) from the British Cooperation (DFID), to reinforce ACTED's capacity to respond. The 5 bases of ACTED (Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Jacmel, Saint Marc and Hinche) have prepared contingency stocks composed principally of energetic biscuits, material for the reinforcement of shelters, jerrycans, aquatabs and hygiene kits, and have also pre-positioned loaded trucks in order to start emergency distributions if needed.
Tropical storm Tomas that is occurring at the end of the cyclonic season (from beginning of June until end of November) could cause many important damages, whilst some 1.2 million persons are still living in spontaneous settlements in the city of Port-au-Prince. Movements of population are also awaited. These displacements, doubled with possible flooding and the associated sanitation degradations, could increase considerably the risk of propagation of cholera.
