St. Boniface Hospital preparing for potential cholera outbreak in Fond des Blancs
...

The Haitian Ministry of health has instituted active surveillance for cholera
and we are required to report all cases of watery diarrhea in people 5 years of age and older. We anticipate that not all cases will make it to the hospital, thus we are making use of our network of community health agents to extend the surveillance to our large catchment area. Community health agents are volunteers in their communities responsible for basic health and wellness education, and monitoring. They have received a training session to identify cholera and will refer cases to the hospital. St. Boniface community health staff will be mobilizing in the coming days to visit each community post to reinforce this vital public health education initiative.

We are also ensuring that the hospital is prepared for patients with cholera. We are busy stocking IV fluids, antibiotics, and rehydration formulas to treat the illness. We have a planned isolation area for cholera patients to be treated in order to decrease the risk of infecting other patients at the hospital. Finally, clinicians will be trained in standard cholera treatment protocols.

VOLUNTEERING W/ST. BONIFACE HAITI FOUNDATION:

The Foundation brings groups of individuals on trips to Haiti to experience life in the third world. We offer 6-day Immersion Trips, 8 to 10-day Work Retreats, and a variety of Medical Trips. Participants come from all walks of life and help in whatever way they can, sharing knowledge, goods, service, and experience with the poor. They also serve a vital role in transporting supplies to the hospital from the U.S.

Each trip is different, depending on the interests and skills of the participants. Some groups are focused on hospital support, others on educational and community projects, but always the emphasis is on experiencing Haitian life, on reflection and the sharing of impressions and discoveries. Participants from every walk of life are welcome. We live simply in Haiti, dormitory style, in clean quarters at the hospital. Communal meals are simple and wholesome. Water for washing etc. is often scarce. We drink bottled water only. In addition to work days, time is set aside for excursions into the countryside. The drive from the capital to the mountain village of Fond des Blancs averages about five hours, over roads that are often severely eroded.
