Here is what Juline could find out. Apparently, WHO and PAHO are involved. Ted

Subject: Re: Rising Numbers of Cholera in Nord-Quest?
The hospital is located in Port de Paix, the are receiving 300 people.
The supplies they need is Lactate ringer, scrub brush, soaps, aprons, cathere, facial mask, gloves, goggles, HTH and cholera beds.
The organizations they have that supporting them is international, WHO, and PAHO.
I have told her about the network team she welcome us to help her in any way we can.

12/1/10 Notes from LPar
It is worth noting the following (because it will relate to this facility) which was taken from after comments relayed from Borgne Hospital. "...we had 5 return patients who had been discharged within the past 4 days (need to clarify the time of discharge to make sure) and this is a red flag for him. He attributes the relapse to a too quick discharge of certain patients who are sent home where they do not have the resources to keep recovering (food, water...), have too long a distance to walk back home and not strong enough for the haul, or were already weak and had other complications/infections and needed more time to get back on their feet.
I found this interesting and asked him to keep tab of these patients'
cases. He thinks that classic treatment modalities might not always apply to
situations like those found in rural Haiti."

12/1/10 Hannah called Dr. Cherubin
Hannah from CHHN was able to confirm that patients are traveling up to 30km some by taxi, moto, walking therefore many severely dehydrated. And that they only have enough supplies to last about 2 days. They are not tracking patients who have been released with ORS instructions, but some return to hospital - around 10%. They are using 600 RL per day with 100 admissions. Going through 6 obes of gloves a day. Unable to state quantity on ORS.

11/30/10 Email from Dr. Cherubin
Things did not really change, we have about 150 patients hospitalized. Those who are not very sick are encouraged to take oral rehydration and are sent home if they don't get worse after a few hours observation. The most urgent needs we have are IV fluids, oral rehydration salts, angiocatheters...
11/22/10 Email from Dr. Cherubin
1) MSF is working in Port-de-Paix, they are supporting the CTC in Immaculée Conception Hospital, we don't have any contact with them
2) We don't have an exact capacity for cholera patients, we have about 40 special cholera beds provided by the «Direction Sanitaire du Nord-Ouest», but most of the patients are hospitalized as we can, some of them just lie on mattresses put on the floor usually two patients on 1 bed. We use about six people on one shift, plus one Doctor who supervises them (the same one since the onset of the epidemic).
3) Most of our patients come from the area of Port-de-Paix or St. Louis du Nord, so they have travel at least 6 kilometers to reach our facility. So, many of them are very dehydrated when admitted. A few of them are from La Pointe, those one are usually not very sick at the moment of their admission.
4) The average stay in hospital is 5 days for very sick patients or 2 days for mild cases.
5) It got to be 80 patients a day about two weeks ago and this number tends to stabilize.
6) We don't have any helicopter landing at our facility.

11/20/10 Email from Dr.Chérubin:
CTC in La Pointe is located at Centre Médical Béraca, and is supported by MTI. We started admitting patients with cholera three weeks ago, and now we are receiving about 80 patients every day. We have some urgent needs like: IV fluids (lactate Ringer, Normal Saline, DNS...), angiocatheters (20, 22, 24), tourniquets, oral rehydration salts, potassium chloride (IV and PO), gloves (non sterile), chlorine, alchool swabs, adhesive tapes, cholera beds, body bags.
The MTI support is very useful, but cannot cover all our needs. We often have shortage of supplies, for example IV fluids, angiocatheter and even oral rehydration salts. We also need more human ressources like nurses and doctors, since our staff must keep our facility running while taking care of cholera patients .

Beraca Church Hospital was listed as CTC on PAHO CTC list. I feel fairly certain that this is the location, but have emailed Med. Dir. to confirm. Lpar 11/19/10
