Mission Statement & Guiding Principles
General Information

The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) is an independent foreign assistance agency of the United States government, working to promote equitable, responsive, and participatory self-help development in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to Part IV, Section 401(b) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1969, "it shall be the purpose of the Foundation, primarily in cooperation with private regional, and international organizations, to:

Strengthen the bonds of friendship and understanding among the peoples of this hemisphere;

Support self-help efforts designed to enlarge the opportunities for individual development;

Stimulate and assist effective and ever wider participation of the people in the development process;

Encourage the establishment and growth of democratic institutions, private and governmental, appropriate to the requirements of the individual sovereign nations of this hemisphere."
The guiding principles of the Inter-American Foundation are to support people, organizations, and processes; channel funds directly to the non-governmental sector; promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-reliance; strengthen democratic principles; empower poor people to solve their own problems; and treat partners with respect and dignity.

In response to the earthquake on January 12th in Haiti, AJWS has created the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund to send immediate emergency aid to communities affected by this disaster. Particular focus is being placed on aiding populations in the crisis zone that have not already been targeted for large-scale relief, such as poor and rural areas outside Port-au-Prince. AJWS's long-standing partnerships in the region have enabled us to send funding directly to our grantees in hard-hit areas on the ground who have the knowledge and capacity to spend the money effectively where it is most immediately needed.

In the wake of the earthquake, AJWS continues to respond to immediate needs by providing food, shelter and emergency health services.

AJWS is committed to funding long-term recovery efforts as our Haitian grantees rebuild their infrastructure and livelihoods after the immediate crisis has passed. AJWS is supporting the reconstruction of roads, community centers, clinics and schools and will also support the replanting of crops and farms to replenish the local food supply to generate income.
