About this facility

Mission
Who we are Tech Assist is a small group of individuals dedicated to assisting Haiti in recovering and rebuilding from the earthquake of 12 January 2010. As time has passed since the earthquake it has become obvious that this singular event provides an opportunity to take the recovery beyond the Haiti of 11 January into the global connected world of the 21st Century. What we do First and foremost we work with Haitians. We work with all sectors of Haitian society (NGOs, Government, private individuals, Diaspora and commercial firms) to identify opportunities to design, provision and build technology infrastructure. Technology infrastructure is the foundation building block of a technologically enabled society. The components of network capability (local and Internet); server farms; mass storage; facility requirements and technical training all are necessary in order to bring the potential benefits of a technology economy to Haiti. We work with individuals and commercial entities in the United States to donate equipment upon the identification of specific need. These donations are almost always of used equipment that has been retired from service. Once equipment is donated it is transported to our refurbishing facility in South Daytona Florida. During refurbishment the technology is cleaned and evaluated. Most often our engineers will create modern operating technology capability by combining components of numerous systems. For example we had a recent donation of a number of Dell servers. These systems are capable and powerful when they are configured with appropriate resources (processors; memory; controllers and so forth) and operating systems appropriate to the identified project. We deployed 11 operating servers out of a donation of 14 machines. The remaining three servers will be used for parts for additional servers in the same class. Using this methodology we have shipped technical capability for a number of projects. We continue to engage in refurbishment of systems for other projects that have been identified and prioritized.
