- from website: The mission of the Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Inc. is to provide safe, sanitary shelter care to homeless men, women, and families; to assist shelter residents in searching for housing, jobs, counseling and treatment; and to foster residents' growth toward independence and responsibility. The Norwalk Emergency Shelter is located at 4 Merritt Street in South Norwalk, Connecticut, where it has 95 beds. It provides emergency shelter for men, women, and families, as well as operates on premises a breakfast, lunch and dinner Soup Kitchen called the "Manna House of Hospitality". Through the Manna House soup kitchen, over 12,000 meals per month. The Shelter's hours are from 5:30 PM to 9:00 AM for single residents and 24 hours a day for families. It is open seven days a week. On average 91 people stay at the Shelter per night, and it is frequently full. The Shelter is part of a network of services within the community. Shelter Case Managers interview and work with each resident to help them search for housing, jobs, job training, and appropriate counseling and treatment. Over the course of a year, our Case Managers make hundreds of referrals to city and state social service agencies.

Most of the families and individuals who come to Norwalk Emergency Shelter arrive with almost nothing, and depend on community donations for household goods, food, and other necessities. There is a particular need for department store or grocery gift certificates, kitchenware, baby clothes and supplies, and disposable items such as soap, toothpaste, and paper products.
Donations can be dropped off at The Norwalk Emergency Shelter at 4 Merritt Street in South Norwalk. You may drop off donations at any time, however, we encourage donors to avoid making deliveries during the hours of 12:00pm to 2:00pm, as we are preparing and serving lunch during this time. Should this be the only time available to you, we will gladly accept the donation. The shelter appreciates any donation individuals or corporations can make.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We can use your help! As a non-profit organization, the Norwalk Emergency Shelter relies heavily on the concern and generosity of our volunteers. Whether you'd like to work in the shelter, cook and serve a meal, or help us in the office, we welcome your help at the Norwalk Emergency Shelter. It is up to you how much of your time you can volunteer. We appreciate any amount of time you can volunteer to the shelter.
There are many different ways to help support the shelter. Many organizations or individuals have either arranged to raise money to purchase something the shelter needs or do the actual purchasing of that need.
