1/27/11 Notes from Lpar
There are several small communities around this end of Haiti. La Plateform is on the map at 19°37 52.09 N, 73° 22 21.22 W. Don't know if JanMakout is east or west of La Plateform.
Coordinates of the other communities that I found in the area:
West of LaPlateform: 19° 37 37.22 N, 73° 18 54.42 W
East of LaPlateform 19° 38 43.82 N, 73° 24 25.04 W
East, east of La Plateform 19° 39 13.22 N, 73° 25 09.60 W

Update from the same partner:
"I have now talked to Chandra from IMC. They will visit again and
reassess and are aware of situation. They said that some of the volume
may be due to difficulties discharging treated patients and lack of
housing for accompanying people.
IOM will work on providing nonmedical WASH supplies, ringers, and
perhaps contract a boat or truck for ambulance."

From an HEAS partner:
In consultation with IOM directors Port au Paix and GNV, and MSPP in
Bombardopoulis and Baie de Herne, IOM Anse Rouge sent a team on a 4
day factfinding and cholera education/NFI distribution trip to
JanMakout and Platform, isolated coastal communities of the commune
Bombardopoulis. In JanMakout they found a crisis situation
characterized as follows:
A makeshift CTU in a school tent presently with 34 cases
One auxiliary is entire medical staff, with some volunteers
Multiple members of families at the CTU often sharing same cot or
floor space. Uninfected children in same space.
General state of fear in community including fear of fishing in the
bay, cancellation of school, some houses abandoned, volunteers fearing
to handle patients
Ringers supply down to 4 to 6 cases. Catheters limited. Minimal
chlorine products.
No phone or electronic communication. Physician for commune visits
occasionally but is overwhelmed at Bombard hospital.
Current drinking water source brackish surface pool.
IOM visited patients, visited 750 people in homes for
sensibilization, and distributed soap, aquatabs and ORS.

recently
