Victims of the Christchurch earthquake can use a Government earthquake helpline which has 41 different languages.

Ethnic Affairs Minister Hekia Parata said the ``language line'' was accessed by phoning 0800 779 997 and speaking to an operator.

The 6.3-magnitude quake, per the USGS, shook New Zealand's South Island and its largest city of Christchurch at 12:50 p.m. local time.

It shook the Canterbury region, which has a population of approximately 500,000.
