Google launches tool to find people in Japan:

Google has launched a person-finder tool to help people get information about their loved ones in quake-ravaged Japan.

The web giant has also posted a crisis centre, with a map of the earthquake, incoming news, disaster bulletin boards, blackout updates and links to emergency centres.

The person finder is located at http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com. People worried about loved ones can type in a person's name to find any information that's been posted about them. Those with information about someone's whereabouts can log on and add it to the database. Google doesn't verify the accuracy of the information posted.

Google launched a similar service after the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand in February.

The crsis centre can be found at http://www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html.

Mobile phone networks are down across much of Japan, making it hard for people to track down missing people there.

But data networks are still operating in Tokyo, so many people are able to get online and use social-networking services.

The biggest earthquake on record to hit Japan struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, ships, cars and farm buildings.

At least 59 people died in the quake and subsequent tsunami, broadcaster NHK said, adding that many more are missing.

Canada's foreign affairs department has set up a hotline for Canadians worried about their loved ones in Japan. The number is 613-943-1055, or toll-free within Canada at 1-800-387-3124.
