Japan Emergency: Helping Survivors

In the wake of the devastating March 11 earthquake and resulting tsunami, Japan is in a full state of emergency. The scale of the disaster continues to grow as the official death toll continues to rise, thousands are reported missing and more than 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Entire villages have been washed away, basic infrastructures such as water and electricity are nonexistent and there is now threat of possible nuclear meltdown.

Relief International is providing support to and through local doctors on the ground now working in the city of Sendai in the most devastated Miyagi Prefecture. Local doctors are working around the clock to treat those seriously injured in hospitals, as well as setting up medical units where communities are seeking refuge temporarily. In addition to injuries caused by debris in the earthquake and tsunami, these medical teams will soon face diseases brought about by lack of clean drinking water. At present, the UN estimates that 1.4 million people are without safe drinking water, making humanitarian assistance an urgent matter. Miyagi Prefecture was inundated with the violent wall of water caused by the tsunami and where relief operations are just starting to reach those most in need.
