Our work in North America

While the work of Northwest Medical Teams focuses primarily on developing countries, we continue to respond to large-scale disasters in our own country.

-----

2005-2006: Gulf Coast hurricane response & recovery

Initial response: Staff & volunteers deployed as soon as possible for the New Orleans convention center, where they aided in logistics & medical care. As we established partnerships with local churches, shelters and organizations,
we sent more volunteer medical teams, as well as health supplies and financial support.

Current focus: Rebuilding homes in Mississippi & Louisiana; sending trauma counselors.

Volunteers: 220 volunteers on 35 teams. Teams include medical, demolition /construction & counseling.

Supplies & financial support:

More than $5.5 million committed for disaster relief in the Gulf Coast

Nearly $900,000 in medical supplies, hygiene products & household items to shelters, churches & schools

$28,000 to fund a mobile medical van that travels to resettlement areas & FEMA trailer communities near Baton Rouge; $10,300 of flu vaccine to stock it.

Last December, Gift of Hope teams delivered toys, cleaning supplies and hygiene products to children and their families in Louisiana and Mississippi

Mobile health van: One of our Mobile Dental vans, temporarily re-designated as a medical unit, worked with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, traveling throughout the Baton Rouge area to administer immunizations to 1500 people. It relocated to Utica , Miss., when Hurricane Rita struck & served in Lafayette, La., as a mobile pharmacy.

Current team openings: Gulf Coast

Team opportunities on the Gulf Coast are limited to demolition, debris removal and construction teams. Skilled laborers (general contractors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc.) are desperately needed for reconstruction.

Cost: Volunteers pay airfare only. All accommodations, food and ground transportation is provided by Northwest Medical Teams.

Details: We prefer pre-arranged groups of 8-12 people. Each team member must submit a completed volunteer application. We plan to send approximately one team to each location every month through June 2007, each trip lasting for one week.

Students & children: Only 18 & up, please.
