This is the MDS Update for September 2020

Early Response to Hurricane Laura
Project Director and two supporting Leadership Volunteers throughout the fall 2020 months. Specific dates, duties, and location are still developing.

We expect to begin scheduling Leadership Volunteers from our winter 2021 waitlist beginning in early October.

https://mds.mennonite.net/mds-response-to-hurricane-laura/

NOTE: Given the COVID-19 pandemic, MDS has put into place some requirements for how projects will operate in the coming months. These include some additional health & safety practices to ensure the health & safety of our volunteers, clients, and community partners. The specific practices will be put into place at each project and may be updated as recommendations and regulations change. Due to the closure of the U.S./Canadian border, the Canadian government travel advisory against travel to the U.S., and uncertainty about insurance coverage for COVID-19-related medical costs, MDS Canada is currently not sending or supporting volunteers serving in the U.S. We continue to evaluate this situation and look forward to the day when Canadians can again serve on U.S. projects.

Mennonite Disaster Service is a channel through which various
constituencies of the Anabaptist church can respond to those
affected by disasters in North America.

While our main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes,
this activity becomes a means of touching lives and helping people
regain faith and wholeness.

AMERICAN SAMOA

Disaster: 2009 Tsunami

This week we again started with a number of days of very serious rains! We dash from shelter to vehicle to stay somewhat dry. This week we started at Veli’s home. The family had helped us by moving their belongings into an attached “lean”. We were able to replace the roof with only a five-minute rain.

Cameron, Louisiana
The family for our fourth house could not hide their excitement as they saw the frame of their house take shape on their concrete piers. In addition to the physical changes on the houses, volunteers hoped their week of service provided some confirmation to the people of Cameron that God and God's people care about them

NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA - RV
Disaster: 2008 Hurricane Ike RV Project
The house we are working on now is getting the old siding ripped off, insulated and new siding put up. We are painting as we go. We will also build a porch and put shutters on the house.

NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA
Disaster: 2008 Hurricane Ike
Several of the volunteers helped Ms. Jacqueline finish packing and moving her belongings so repairs to the floors could begin. Winds from Hurricane Ike damaged the roof, allowing water to come into the house, damaging the floors as well. Rotted flooring has been replaced with new wood.

February 11, 2010
New Orleans, Louisiana
DISASTER: 2005 GULF COAST HURRICANES
Despite having a smaller crew this week, much was accomplished. The Ms. H house had all of the walls and ceilings covered with sheet rock plus one and a half coats of mud were applied. The Mrs. G house had most of the inside of the house covered with sheet rock, and mudding got off to a good start.

CHEEK, TEXAS
Disaster: 2008 Hurricane Ike RV Project
Mr. Chris’s house was put on hold until Thursday, waiting for approval to repair more than was originally scheduled. When we began working on the house we found much more damage than met the eye at first glance. As soon as we were granted approval, Jim and Pete began to pull out the bottom half of the drywall to rid the house of mold and also allow for rewiring.

Pass Christian, Mississippi
Disaster: 2005 Gulf Coast Hurricanes
We dedicated Miss Rose Marie’s house on Tuesday. Several of her siblings, children, grandchildren, and neighbors showed up for the celebration. Several of our volunteers took part in presenting Miss Rose Marie with a Bible, a wall-hanging, a house key, and an occupancy permit. Tears filled her eyes as she thanked everyone involved in completing her home. She is very excited to be able to “come back home”.
