Alabama Tornado Response

Samaritan’s Purse is helping victims of the violent storms that ripped through the state

Samaritan’s Purse has workers and equipment in Alabama to help victims of a series of violent tornadoes that pummeled the state Wednesday.

We have deployed two of our Disaster Relief Units, tractor-trailers fully stocked with emergency tools and supplies, to serve as command posts for staff and volunteers in the hardest hit areas. One unit is based at Garywood Assembly of God in Bessemer, about 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, and another is being set up in Tuscaloosa today.

“Authorities here have opened the doors and given us the ability to do what we've been called here to do, and to get volunteers in here and allow them to bless people and give them hope in what looks like a hopeless situation to them,” said Rick Cobb, who is leading our team in the Birmingham area.

Our staff is mobilizing volunteers to begin removing debris, making emergency repairs on houses, and demonstrating God’s care and concern to tornado victims.

“There were blocks and blocks wiped out, trees just snapped off and stripped,” Cobb said. “It's just total devastation. People will have to completely start over.”

The severe storms Wednesday spawned tornadoes and winds that wiped out homes and businesses across Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia. Entire towns were leveled, and hundreds of thousands of people were without power. At least 297 people were killed, including 210 in Alabama.

The National Weather Service received reports of more than 150 tornadoes around the regions, including 66 in Alabama and 38 in Mississippi. The worst tornado outbreak in U.S. history occurred in April 1974, when 148 twisters touched down in 13 states over a 16-hour period.

The loss of life is the greatest from an outbreak of U.S. tornadoes since April 1974, when the weather service said 315 people were killed by a storm that swept across 13 Southern and Midwestern states.
