The National Weather Service said the tornado was either a strong EF1 or possibly an EF2, and was on the ground for 6.25 miles in Hennepin County plus an additional 8 miles across Anoka and Ramsey counties. An EF1 tornado has speeds of up to 109 mph. An EF2 has speeds of 110-137 mph.
Authorities said one man died in the storm and another died helping clear debris afterward. Dozens were injured, but all had been released from the hospital by Tuesday afternoon.
The tornado was part of a larger outbreak through the central U.S. that included Joplin, Mo., where scores of people were killed, and La Crosse, Wis.

The City has set up an emergency shelter at the Northeast Armory, just east of Broadway and Central. The Red Cross is also in the area, in the process of setting up a shelter and providing shelter, food and clothing for residents whose homes are affected. Victims are urged to call 612-871-7676.
North Memorial has opened the Family Center in the Vance DeMong Classroom as a patient waiting area and for individuals seeking temporary shelter.

Minneapolis tornado rated strong EF1 or an EF2

The National Weather Service has concluded that the deadly tornado that swept North Minneapolis was either a strong EF1 or an EF2.
The weather service says it was one tornado that struck the Twin Cities on Sunday. The tornado was on the ground for six-and-a-quarter miles in Hennepin County plus an additional eight miles across Anoka and Ramsey counties.
The weather service says some of the field information still needs to be processed. But the service says it's safe to say the twister will be rated as either a strong EF1 or possibly an EF2.
An EF1 tornado has speeds of up to 109 mph. An EF2 has speeds of 110-137 mph
