Long Term Recovery Committee meeting set for Tuesday Posted On: Sunday, Feb. 20 2011 10:20 PM

BELTON — The Bell County Long Term Recovery Committee, which formed after the Sept. 8 flood to aid disaster victims, will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bell County Communications Center, 708 W. Avenue O in Belton.
Discussion about requests for assistance from flood victims and available funding is planned.
The LTRC, a subcommittee of the Mid-Tex Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, was formed after the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine caused significant flooding in various parts of the county.
Although the committee initially focused on helping homeowners who suffered losses as a result of the flooding, it also aims to provide services to those affected by future disasters.
The committee hopes to connect disaster victims in need of housing with available resources to ensure they have a place to stay.
To meet their goals, committee members are hoping to draw resources — manpower, supplies and funding — from a variety of sources, including churches, nonprofit and civic organizations, colleges and businesses. Volunteers and donations are welcome.

BELTON — A new group has formed in Bell County to help homeowners with uninsured losses recover from disasters, such as the September flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hermine.
The Bell County Long Term Recovery Committee organized Tuesday during a meeting at First Baptist Church in Belton. The group plans to operate in conjunction with Mid-Tex Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters.
Members include city and county officials, emergency responders and representatives from the religious community and community service organizations.
Among those present for the inaugural meeting were Bell County Emergency Management Director Dennis Baker, Bell County Fire Marshal Steve Casey, Belton Fire Chief Roy Harmon and Tara Stafford with the United Way of Central Texas.
No one was present to represent the cities of Salado or Killeen, but organizers hope that will change in the future.
During the meeting, Steve
Cannon, executive director of J.A.I.L. Ministry, was voted temporary committee chairman. Two subcommittees also were created — Case Management, and Finance and Donations.
Additional subcommittees are likely to follow.
One of the LTRC's first duties will be to pen a letter to the governor requesting financial assistance through the Texas Disaster Relief Fund, members said.
Anna Tangredi, a volunteer agency liaison with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, provided insight into the process.
She suggested the letter emphasize the committee's role, what's needed and that the county will not be receiving any funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster relief for losses associated with the tropical storm.
The LTRC also is looking to the community for additional committee members, financial support and volunteers.
Members hope to draw a response from churches, civic organizations, businesses and other groups in the community with resources available.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9, with the location to be announced at a later date.
