General FAQ
General FAQ about Occupy Boston
These points have come out of the last three nights of General Assembly and are not exhaustive of all the movements and positions represented. This list will evolve as the occupation evolves.
What are you protesting?
• There is no one single issue or demand that summarizes our movement. People are fed up with how our country is being run and want fundamental, lasting change of many kinds.
• The top 1% of Americans own 50% of the nation’s wealth and use this wealth to undermine the founding principles of our democracy. Our democracy is not for sale.
• We are the 99% of America who are not being represented equally by our government and whose basic needs are not being met.
What do you all hope to accomplish by occupying Dewey Square Park?
• We want to bring attention to the fact that 99% of America is not being represented equally by our government and that our ability to meet our basic needs is being eroded.
• We want to inspire a powerful national movement to challenge the status quo of an economic system that subverts both our government and the social fabric of our country.
• Through this movement, we want to engage citizens in a meaningful national dialog about how we might reform business and government and restore the promise of America.
How many people do expect to show up/participate?
• We don’t know, but the planning in Boston began on Tuesday, September 27 with a diverse group of over 300 people. Since then, Occupy Boston’s visibility has grown steadily.
• Occupy Boston has worked to plan and execute this nonviolent occupation through the direct, democratic process of General Assembly. It will begin on Friday, September 30 at 6 pm in Dewey Square Park, located in the heart of Boston’s Financial District.
• Everyone is encouraged to come down and participate in any way they can. You need not understand in order to begin participating in the conversation, and you need not commit to occupation in order to be part of this movement.
How long do you expect this to last?
• Occupy Boston will continue until we are joined by policy-makers, business leaders, and the citizens of our country in building a just and inclusive community for everyone.
What’s the People’s Mike?
• It’s a system of amplification in which the speaker is echoed by the crowd to make sure everyone can hear. It also provides an active experience, as opposed to a passive one.
