FEMA Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program
Atlantic County residents who are in shelters and cannot
return to their homes due to damages caused by Hurricane
Sandy may be eligible for participation in the Federal
Emergency Management Agency's Transitional Sheltering
Assistance (TSA) program. The program allows eligible
survivors to stay in participating hotels or motels
until more suitable housing accommodations are available.
Residents who have been displaced and need a place to stay
should contact FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or register online at www.disasterassistance.gov.
Disaster assistance applicants who have a speech disability
or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585
directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS),
call 1-800-621-3362 .
FEMA is asking that those with ability to register online do so
to keep phone lines open for those without connectivity and to
share this information with friends and neighbors.
Individuals and households may be eligible for TSA, if:
-They register with FEMA for assistance
-They pass identity verification
-Their pre-disaster primary residence is located in a geographic
area that is designated for TSA and occupancy is verified
-As a result of the disaster, they are displaced from their
pre-disaster residence and are currently staying in a shelter
This federal assistance is intended to provide a place to
stay for a specific period of time for eligible survivors
who are displaced from their pre-disaster residence and are
currently staying in a shelter. This federal program will
not reimburse applicants for previously incurred hotel expenses
and applicants are responsible for their own meals and for
any lodging costs above the authorized allowance.
In addition, FEMA is also providing assistance such as
grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost
loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs
to help individuals and business owners recover from the
effects of the disaster.

VOLUNTEER:
The Christie Administration has activated an Emergency
Volunteer Response Hotline. If you are interested in
volunteering with a variety of Hurricane Sandy clean-up
activities in New Jersey, call the state’s volunteer
emergency response hotline at 1-800-JERSEY-7
(1-800-537-7397).
We are continuing to investigate any issues with this
volunteer phone number. If you are an official from any
volunteer organization helping with cleanup and the
victims of Hurricane Sandy, please use the comments
section below to spread the word about your organization
and ways that people can get involved. Thank you for your
patience.
If storm conditions preclude the hotline from being answered
by live operators, volunteers may call one of two backup
hotline numbers: 609-775-5236 or 908-303-0471. Volunteers
may also send an email to rowena.madden @ sos.state.nj.us.
If you are already a trained volunteer affiliated with an
emergency response organization, please contact that agency
to register your readiness to receive an assignment.
This hotline is managed by the New Jersey Business Action
Center and the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism. Both
divisions are within the New Jersey Department of State.
Calls placed to the hotline will be received by the Business
Action Center, which will work with the Office of Volunteerism
and NJ AmeriCorps to match and direct volunteers where help
is needed. When live operators are not available, callers
can leave a voicemail message that includes their place of
residence, availability and skills.

Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance For NJ Hurricane
Victims
Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is available
for persons, including self-employed individuals, who were
living or working in the affected counties at the time of
the disaster, and who are unemployed as a direct result of
the damages caused by the storm.
Most impacted workers may already qualify for regular
Unemployment Insurance. The federal DUA is a special
program that covers many people who otherwise may not
be eligible for regular Unemployment Insurance.
At this time, the DUA is available only in connection
with the ten (10) NJ counties, including Atlantic County,
now declared a federal a disaster area. Additional counties
may be added to the disaster declaration following continued
damage assessments by local officials, representatives of
the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management and the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA).
If you are unemployed because of the disaster that began
on Oct. 28, you should FIRST file for unemployment insurance
benefits through the Internet by going to www.njuifile.net.
The Internet processes claims faster. However, if needed,
people may also file a claim by telephone by contacting
the state Department of Labor's Re-employment Call Centers
at:
North Jersey (201) 601-4100
Central Jersey (732) 761-2020
South Jersey (856) 507-2340
A 30-day deadline ending December 3, 2012 is in effect for
filing DUA claims resulting from Hurricane Sandy.
For additional information regarding Disaster Unemployment
Assistance or for FEMA services please call the FEMA emergency
number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY)
for the hearing and speech impaired. Information is also
