- From the site:
"*Our self-managed community model is one of the first in the county.Recently a
citizen advisory panel appointment by Seattle Mayor McGinn recently cited one of
SHARE’s indoor shelter models, the Bunkhouse, as an efficient and effective
alternative to develop additional shelter capacity.*"** * SHARE is Seattle Housing and Resource Effort (co-ed).
* WHEEL is the Women's Housing, Equality and Enhancement League (women-only).
* We are partner organizations of homeless and formerly homeless men and women.
* All of our efforts are self-managed; run by the homeless members themselves.
* We are King County's largest shelter network, with 15 indoor shelters and 2
Tent Cities.
* In addition to shelters and Tent Cities, we facilitate a Storage Locker
Program and a Housing-For-Work Program called SHARE2.
* We are not a social service organization; we are a self-help group. - Service

As promised, here is the link to the self-managed shelter ops in Seattle:

I just talked with the office there and sent them an email. They are going to
ask around and see if they know of anyone in Boston already doing this.
I'm also in the process of locating the woman who is in charge of preparing the
report for the state on "reforming" the housing system in the state into
regional operations. I think that's a good thing, by the way. Too many
"fifedoms" have been created that arent' serving us well. Anyway, maybe she'd
be into promoting a self-managed shelter as an experiment to see if it could
work here?
The SHARE network in Seattle is described as this:
"SHARE, the Seattle Housing and Resource Effort, is a group of homeless and
formerly homeless men and women who organize their own self-managed shelters and
other survival resources, while doing self-advocacy for the social changes to
end homelessness. Some other cities have groups like SHARE. SHARE has fourteen
shelters hosted by churches and other community groups. The key to the shelter
space is kept in a central location. Each night, a responsible shelter member
picks up the key, the shelter record book, and bus tickets for shelter members.
The shelter members go to the shelter, let themselves in, and set up for the
night. They govern themselves according to agreed upon rules. In the morning,
they clean up after themselves and let themselves out. Shelter supplies are
provided by SHARE. Once a week, volunteers from the shelter wash the blankets
with transportation and laundry facilities provided by SHARE."
