Edmonton Humane Society

EHS continues to provide support to organizations helping Wood Buffalo evacuees and pets. EHS has supplied food, resources, and equipment, in addition to over fifty volunteers dedicated to pet care and enrichment at evacuation sites within the City of Edmonton. EHS has raised funds for disaster relief, and continues to serve as a donation site for the general public.

Proceeds raised by the Edmonton Humane Society in relation to the Fort McMurray Wildfires will be used to pay for relief efforts to assist animals that are affected. Any funds raised in excess of our fundraising goal may be directed to the Edmonton Humane Society’s Sick & Injured Animal Fund.

Fort McMurray Animal Update

The first transport of rescued animals from Fort McMurray arrived at the Alberta SPCA’s reception centre in Edmonton early this morning.

More than 200 animals were checked through the intake and triage areas by volunteers from the Edmonton Humane Society and the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force. Most of the morning’s arrivals are cats. There are also many dogs.

The rescue teams in Fort McMurray—the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Animal Control Officers, the peace officers up there from the Alberta SPCA and the Calgary Humane Society, the volunteers from theAlberta Animal Rescue Crew Society - AARCS—were overjoyed to hear that the first truck arrived with all its occupants safe and accounted for.

Each animal arrived with its owner identified. The Alberta SPCA will contact the owners as soon as possible to arrange their reunion with their pets.

Teams are making efforts to rescue all animals from the area. Filling out the municipality's pet rescue form allows for animals to be matched with their owners faster.

Emergency Pet Rescues in Fort McMurray

Peace officers from the Alberta SPCA and the Calgary Humane Society have been working tirelessly in Fort McMurray to help the Wood Buffalo Animal Control Services with the rescue of as many animals as possible.

Phase 2 of the animal response plan has been in operation for nearly two days.

The extraction teams, each led by an experienced animal protection peace officer, have been moving from house to house. They have fed, watered, assessed and removed hundreds of animals to the staging area. The peace officers and their teams have training and experience in dealing with animal rescues and are equipped to handle emergency situations.

The rescued animals are then being transported to a facility set up in Edmonton by the Alberta SPCA with the assistance of the Edmonton Humane Society, the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers and rescue groups who have assisted in these efforts in Fort McMurray.

Previously, emergency responders had provided water, food and care for animals they encountered while they worked to ensure the safety of the area for the animal rescue teams.

If you were forced to abandon your pet during the evacuation of the Fort McMurray area, please ensure you have filled out the Emergency Pet Rescue Request form

We will provide updates as soon as they are available.

~ UPDATE ~ 05/05/16

We are grateful for the outpouring of community support for the people and pets impacted by the Alberta wildfires.

Local businesses have stepped up in a big way, providing donations of food, supplies, and money.

We have pallets waiting to be delivered up north, where supplies will be dispersed as needed. We are in constant contact with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, and have teams on standby to help when it is safe to proceed.

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) and the Animal Care & Control Centre - Edmonton (ACCC) are working closely with the Alberta SPCA and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association to assist evacuees and their companion animals who have been displaced due to the Fort McMurray wildfires.

EHS is ready to accept displaced animals WITHOUT owners. Animals WITH owners should proceed to Edmonton Expo Centre for registration. Evacuees do not need to go to the reception centre if they are staying with friends or family in Edmonton or have arranged other accommodation in Edmonton. It is recommended that evacuees provide their name, location and confirmation of safety with the Red Cross through its family reunification phone number (1-888-350-6070) and/or the Municipality of Wood Buffalo wildfire@rmwb.ca. Stray animals that come into our care will be housed indefinitely until they are reclaimed.

In addition to Animal Care and Control, EHS is partnering with the following Alberta humane societies (to act as overflow locations if/when EHS reaches capacity):

Calgary Humane Society
Red Deer & District SPCA
Cochrane & Area Humane Society
Lloydminster and District SPCA
Hinton and District SPCA
Grande Prairie & District SPCA

If you have a pet left in the Wood Buffalo region, please fill out this form

or call 780 229 2939.

For all livestock inquiries, contact the Alberta SPCA.

EHS will accept monetary donations through our Disaster Fund; we will also accept any and all donations of food and supplies directly at the shelter.

We do not require any additional volunteer support or foster homes at this time. However, we are taking names for potential foster homes should the need arise. To add yourself to this list, please fill out the form.
