Notes

At the Boston Rescue Mission, our programs and services focus a great deal on preventing homelessness. When families of greater Boston have budgets stretched so thin that they must choose between feeding themselves and staying in their homes, our meal programs relieve pressure on caregivers and allow them to focus resources in other areas to prevent a homeless situation. As men and women in need of employment struggle to make ends meet, our vocational development programs help to prepare them for higher-paying positions in today's workplaces. On the journey through recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, our residential recovery programs strengthen and empower our clients by building and reinforcing a solid foundation of sobriety. From a state of sobriety, clients then can rebuild self-esteem in a supportive and accountable recovery environment and break the cycle of addiction that so often leads to homelessness. Our range of services also strives to meet the needs of a population of female ex-offenders. The goal of this re-entry program is to reduce recidivism, increase public safety, and help female ex-offenders to re-enter society as independent women living fulfilling and crime-free lives. By supporting our brothers and sisters in times of need, we enable them to focus on maintaining a stable housing situation for themselves and their families.

For those clients caught in the throes of street living or in the vicious cycle of addiction, detoxification, and relapse, our facilities and programs work toward ending homelessness. Our staff and community volunteers help to stabilize lives in crisis by serving hot meals to anyone who is hungry. We open our emergency shelter every night of the year to offer a warm and safe place for up to 120 people to sleep. Our volunteers meet and counsel shelter guests about leaving street life and entering recovery programs like those at the Mission. Those same recovery programs bring much more than just sobriety--they bring hope to men and women who felt their lives slipping away from them; hope that the bleak world of addiction and homelessness will finally come to an end.

Over the past several years, the Boston Rescue Mission has served over 165,000 meals each year. This includes the meals served at the food pantry, residential meals, shelter meals and the three o'clock meal. The Mission serves meals at six mealtimes on weekdays. The weekend schedule is slightly different.

Food Pantry
The food pantry program provided over 27,000 meals last year to individuals and families in the city of Boston. Program participants must present a picture I.D., rent receipt, utility bill, and be a resident of the city of Boston to be eligible for the food pantry program. Lack of affordable housing in the city of Boston has significantly increased the demand for the food pantry program over the last several years. Running the food pantry is a volunteer position.

Residential Meals
Resident clients in our recovery programs are served three meals per day. Breakfast is served at 7:00AM, lunch at 11:30AM, and dinner at 4:30PM. All meals have available shifts for those who would like to volunteer serving in the kitchen. Some of the residential clients participate in the preparing and serving of the meals as a way to contribute to their mandatory house hours.

Shelter Meals
The shelter doors open and dinner is served at 7:00PM. The lights go off at 9:00PM and the wake up call is at 5:30 AM. At 5:30AM the overnight guests are served a breakfast and leave the shelter by 6:15AM. Both the dinner and breakfast mealtimes are available shifts for those who would like to volunteer by serving meals in the kitchen.

The Three O'Clock Meal
The Three O'clock meal is open to anyone who is hungry. Typically, between fifty to one hundred people come to the Mission to enjoy this afternoon meal. This is a popular meal for our Corporate Partners, who enjoy gathering a few employees to serve a meal once per month or so. It is also a popular meal for those wishing to reach out to a homeless person and perhaps to establish a personal relationship.
